Poltergeist?

My shirt being tugged, the chandelier on my dining room moving back and forth, the door opening even after I locked it…these and several more experiences have been part of my entire life. I have lived in this house since I was born in 1987, being the daughter of what people in my country, Costa Rica, would call a witch. My mom was born in the “Witches Town” or so it’s called for being the place in which all our folklore legends have started. One of the legends says that whoever is born in that city will acquire strange powers, and I do believe I’ve inherited part of my mom’s powers. Both of us have always sensed things, even when my dad and my brother feel we are just being paranoid. We both feel when someone is in danger, when someone is under pain or even a depression. We have even been able to say exactly what other people are thinking or feeling in that precise moment. In my case, I’ve been able to predict simple things like a small accident of a close friend, to more complex situations like a suicide and even the kidnap of a girl in front my house. Maybe it is these powers what attracted whatever is playing with us.

Since I can recall, I have always sensed there’s something unusual in my house. Many friends that have visited my house just refuse to come back as they felt an evil presence in here. I wouldn’t call it evil or demonic, for me it’s fascinating. From my family, only my mom and I have had close encounters with what’s playing with us. Only the both of us have seen strange things, only we have heard pictures in the walls falling down just to see them back on their place when we go check. Many people would panic at this thought, but after 18 years (from which I remember 15) I’m just used to it. I no longer panic when I see the lights on the window while practicing piano, or hear the bells downstairs when I’m home alone. In the past years the activity has ceased a bit, after I had the closest encounter with it…

When I was around 12, a friend came over to spend the night at my house.  We went to sleep around 11 pm, and part of my ritual before sleeping is taking off my contact lenses. Without them my sight is quite blurry, and I really can’t recognize anything without them. Few hours later, I felt someone pulling my blanket. When I opened my eyes I noticed it was my friend, making me signs to stay quiet as she pointed to the mirror in front my bed. I then realized my sight was no longer blurry, I was seeing perfectly. I remember I even rubbed and touched my eyes to check if I had not forgotten to take off my lenses. But that thought faded away when I finally saw what my friend was staring. There was a little child, maybe around 7 or 8, playing in front the mirror. He kept looking at himself on the mirror and hiding from it inmediately, he reminded me of those puppies that see themselves on a mirror and get scared by the sight. Describing the child is a little hard for me. His shape was quite defined, but the details of his face and clothes weren’t as clear. About the colors, it all was white/grey, as if he was eradiating a light of its own.

He played for a couple of minutes. I noticed my friend was almost in a trance already, she wouldn’t move and her breathing was so slow and deep you could swear she was sleeping, yet her eyes were wide open and focused on this creature. Finally the little child noticed we were there, awake and watching him. He turned at me for a couple of seconds, although I felt it was an eternity, until he just turned around and ran away. As I saw him leaving my room, my sight became blurry again, gradually. My friend was taken out of her trance, and she just started crying and shaking. I spent the whole night calming her down, and when she finally relaxed again, she simply couldn’t remember anything that happened. Even today when you ask her about it, she will just answer she wasn’t sure why she reacted that way, she just felt terrified and had no idea why. I never had the strength to tell her what happened that night…

For some years after that, we had a peaceful period. No more pictures falling down, no more doors opening…However, in the past months I have noticed the lights of the window have reappeared. There are some specific songs I’ve noticed that seem to make the lights more colorful and “playful”, while some others just make them completely disappear. My computer chair has started to move again, in fact as I’ve been typing this I’ve felt it shake a little. It’s nothing too drastic or to be afraid of, maybe it’s just me feeling no longer scared by it.

I’ve decided to call it a Poltergeist, not sure if it’s right to call it that or simply call it a ghost. I have never felt threatened by it, and somehow I feel he respects us and our belongings. I feel it’s just seeking for a little attention and fun, without really affecting our lives. I really don’t think I want to encounter him again, I’ve realized it doesn’t want to be seen. Maybe it’s just part of its game, have fun with us without letting us realize what it is all about.

I really don’t know if the activity will be stronger than before, or even if he will decide to stop the childish games and become harsher. My mom and I are ready to encounter whatever happens, and maybe, eventually, my dad and brother will finally realize we weren’t just being paranoid…
